FAA Probes Software Glitch in Some Boeing 737 Max Jets

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a software glitch in some Boeing 737 Max jets that could lead to an automated flight guidance system disengaging during an aborted landing.

The issue, which occurs when pilots make changes to their pre-programmed flight plan while using autopilot and precision approach, can cause the plane's vertical navigation system (VNAV) to disengage and transition to a less sophisticated level of control. This would require pilots to take additional steps during subsequent approaches.

Boeing first learned of the issue in November 2024 but initially determined it was not a safety concern until earlier this year, when the company received 'additional information' from operators that prompted a formal safety review board.
