FAA Slams Boeing with $3.1 Million Fine for Safety Violations
Boeing faced a significant fine of US$3.1 million from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) after an investigation revealed widespread safety violations at the company's plants in Washington and Kansas.
The FAA conducted a review from September 2023 through February 2024, which uncovered hundreds of quality-system violations at Boeing's 737 assembly plant in Renton, Wash., and at the Wichita, Kan., fuselage plant operated by subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems.
According to Reuters, investigators found that a Boeing employee had pressured a co-worker to sign off on a non-compliant 737 MAX so the company could meet its delivery schedule.
The safety violations are also linked to the January 2024 Alaska Airlines mid-air emergency, in which a 737 MAX 9 was found missing four key bolts. This incident damaged Boeing's reputation and led to an FAA production cap of 38 aircraft per month.
