FAA Targets Boeing Passenger Seats Over Safety Concerns

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has released a proposed rulemaking to address safety concerns related to tens of thousands of passenger seats on Boeing 737 aircraft. The issue revolves around possible incorrect installation, which could lead to loose seats during severe turbulence.

The notice affects 453 Boeing model 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 airplanes. Inspectors will need to check each seat-track fitting for correct installation and perform on-condition actions as necessary. The FAA estimates the cost of compliance at $2,656,845 based on an hourly rate of $85 per seat assembly.

Airlines might not be entirely responsible for covering these costs, however, as Boeing has indicated that some or all of them may be covered under warranty, reducing the financial burden on operators. The aerospace giant has updated its processes to ensure inspections prior to delivery and has already issued guidance in December 2025.

The FAA is accepting comments on the proposed rule until September 10. While Boeing supports the mandatory implementation of this guidance, it's unclear whether all affected aircraft will be inspected before this deadline.
