Fall's Softer Color Trends: Home Interiors Shift Away from Rich Hues

Home interiors are shifting towards softer and more nuanced colors this fall, says Ruth Mottershead, creative director of Little Greene. Unlike previous seasons, which saw a focus on rich, saturated hues, homeowners are now embracing a more subtle approach.

This season's color trends occupy the middle ground between warm and cool tones, making them easier to live with and layer. Green-tinged neutrals, such as stone-inspired shades with subtle green undertones, are gaining popularity. These colors shift beautifully throughout the day, creating a lasting impact without being too bold.

Purple is also taking on a more restrained role this fall, with muted, gray undertones adding depth to rooms without overwhelming them. Smoky purples like Sherwin-Williams's Midnight bring a sense of drama without being overpowering. Meanwhile, wine-inspired shades like Sherwin-Williams's Cordovan offer a richness that feels softer and more timeless.

Experts recommend building depth by layering multiple shades within the same family, rather than relying on stark contrast. For example, pairing Roycroft Bronze Green with SecretGarden adds richness without being too bold. Golden yellows are also becoming more subdued, with softened marigold-inspired shades feeling earthy and understated.
