Falmer Stadium Opens Doors to Brighton Fans After Years of Controversy
Brighton and Hove Albion's new stadium at Falmer has been a long time coming, after the team was forced to play its home games at Gillingham for two years in the late 1990s due to the poor condition of the Goldstone Ground.
The club sold the Goldstone Ground for £7 million and then quickly resold it for £22 million, leaving Brighton with no choice but to find a new home. The team spent £2m to bring a council-owned athletics stadium at Withdean up to Football League standard, before finally receiving planning permission in July 2007 for the new Falmer stadium.
The American Express Community Stadium, as it's now known, cost £93 million and has a capacity of 31,876. Away fans are allocated up to 3,300 tickets in the South-East corner and part of the East & South Stands lower tiers.
