FDA Greenlights World's First Oral PCSK9 Inhibitor Lipfendra

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Lipfendra, the world's first oral PCSK9 inhibitor drug, manufactured by Merck. This breakthrough in cholesterol treatment is expected to transform the way patients manage their bad cholesterol levels. Unlike traditional statin drugs, Lipfendra works differently by increasing the liver's ability to remove existing bad cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Statins primarily slow down cholesterol production in the liver, reducing LDL levels by 20-50%. However, they can cause problems such as severe muscle pain or elevated liver enzymes. In contrast, Lipfendra increases the liver's ability to remove bad cholesterol, leading to a significant reduction of 50-60%.

The main advantage of Lipfendra over previous PCSK9 inhibitors is its oral form, which frees patients from frequent injections and hospital visits. Merck's tablet has minimal side effects, such as mild dizziness or upset stomach, making it a more convenient option for patients.
