Federal Circuit Affirms Invalidity of AudienceScience Ad-Targeting Patents
Alphabet Inc.'s Google has emerged victorious in its battle against AudienceScience Inc. over internet-advertising patents. The US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Friday affirmed a 2024 decision by the US District Court for the Northern District of California, which invalidated three patents related to targeting advertisements.
The court ruled that the patents cover an abstract idea not eligible for patenting, according to a statement from the appeals court. This means that Google and YouTube LLC will not be liable for infringement on these specific patents.
AudienceScience had sued Google and YouTube in 2024 over the patented technology, which aims to maximize revenue generation through targeted advertisements. The decision marks a significant win for Alphabet's Google and its advertising business.
