Fertilizer Stocks vs Specialty Chemicals: A Widening Valuation Chasm
Fertilizer stocks are undervalued compared to specialty chemicals, according to a recent analysis by Investing.com. The report found that fertilizer pure-plays trade at a significant discount to their specialty chemical counterparts, with CF Industries trading at just 9.1x trailing P/E vs. Sherwin-Williams at 31.2x and Ecolab at 38.1x.
The fertilizer complex offers 10% FCF yields and EV/EBITDA below 7x, while premium chemical names demand 20x+ on EBITDA with negative fair-value gaps. This valuation chasm between the two corners of the chemicals universe is stark, with fertilizer pure-plays priced like cyclicals at a trough, and specialty chemical compounders commanding quality premiums that have only widened.
One key difference between the two sectors is cash flow generation relative to market cap. CF Industries converts a 10% FCF yield, meaning the market prices the entire business at just 10x its cash generation, compared to Sherwin-Williams at 3.8% and Ecolab at 2.3%. On the dividend front, fertilizer names also pay more, with Nutrien yielding 3.0%, Mosaic offering 3.7%, while specialty chem names like Sherwin-Williams and Ecolab pay under 1%.
