Fervo and Google Ink Record-Breaking Geothermal Deal
Fervo Energy has secured a massive power-purchase agreement (PPA) with Google to supply carbon-free energy for a new data center in Utah. The deal, worth 396 megawatts (MW), marks a significant step forward for Fervo's enhanced geothermal system (EGS) GeoCluster project at Cape Station.
The project is expected to come online by 2028 and will be the first of its kind in Utah. Google has committed to purchasing the clean energy, which will serve as a building block for its data center plans. The PPA also includes an option for Google to expand its energy purchase by approximately 600 MW by June 2030, bringing the total capacity to nearly 1 gigawatt (GW).
Fervo and Google have previously collaborated on Project Red, a commercial pilot project in Nevada that came online in 2023. The success of this project has paved the way for further development of enhanced geothermal systems.
