Fervo Energy, Google Expand Geothermal Partnership to Utah
Fervo Energy has expanded its partnership with Google through a new deal in Utah. The 396-MW geothermal project, known as the Cape Station project, will provide clean and firm power to the tech giant's data centers. This agreement marks an expansion of Fervo's existing partnership with Google, which began in Nevada for Project Red in 2023.
The project utilizes the enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) method, a human-made solution that creates new fractures in hot subsurface rock to generate electricity. By injecting fluid deep underground and controlling conditions, the EGS system allows for more efficient heat absorption and power generation. Fervo's modular 'GeoCluster' approach involves constructing interconnected grid facilities across its leased land sites.
This deal comes as Fervo has received significant investment in recent months. In May, the company raised $2 billion from its initial public offering to invest in upcoming developments across the U.S., including this Utah project. The Cape Station project is expected to have a substantial impact on the local economy, with the potential to channel $1.1 billion through supply chain agreements, construction, and employment once fully operational.
