Fervo Energy Secures Historic Geothermal Deal With Google, Stocks Surge
Fervo Energy has announced its largest-ever power purchase agreement with Google, securing a deal to supply 396 megawatts of carbon-free geothermal power to the tech giant's operations in Utah. The agreement marks a significant milestone for enhanced geothermal technology and underscores the growing demand from big tech companies for reliable clean energy.
The deal builds on an existing relationship between Fervo and Google, with the two companies having previously collaborated on smaller-scale projects. According to Tim Latimer, Fervo's CEO, the new agreement demonstrates the company's ability to replicate its commercial model at scale.
Google plans to use the electricity to support a potential data center in Utah, although no final location has been confirmed. The power agreement provides flexibility for Google as it evaluates its infrastructure needs and decarbonization goals. Lucia Tian, Google's director of advanced energy technologies, noted that the deal will be a foundational building block for power generation for a data center presence in Utah.
The partnership reflects a broader scramble among hyperscale cloud providers and AI developers to secure dedicated clean energy supplies. Geothermal power's ability to generate electricity continuously has made it an attractive option for technology companies seeking to meet reliability requirements and decarbonization goals.
