Festive Season Lifts Nifty FMCG Stocks as Money Rotates into Defensives
Nifty FMCG stocks rose 2% on Wednesday as the festive season put consumer stocks in the spotlight. The Nifty FMCG index snapped a four-day losing streak, with most frontline stocks including Hindustan Unilever (HUL), ITC, Dabur India, Emami, Godrej Consumer Products, and Procter & Gamble Hygiene and Health Care gaining between 2% to 4%. Thirteen stocks in the Nifty FMCG basket advanced while only two declined.
The index rose 1.68% to 45,583.90 by 11:47 AM, outperforming the Nifty 50's 0.46% gain. Sunny Agrawal from SBI Securities attributed the surge to money rotating out of riskier sectors and into defensives like FMCG due to the current uncertain environment.
Agrawal also mentioned that the onset of the festive season, which begins with Ganesh Chaturthi and extends till Diwali and Christmas in December, should support FMCG as a sector. The Nifty FMCG index has been trading below its key short-term and long-term moving averages, exhibiting a lower-high and lower-low structure.
Vipin Kumar from Globe Capital Market noted that elevated crude oil prices have a direct negative impact on inflation, presenting a significant headwind for the FMCG industry. He believes any recovery up to 47,500-48,000 spot levels may attract selling interest.
