Financial Stocks Lag in Q3 Amid Rate Pressures
The financial sector struggled in the third quarter, underperforming the broader market. The State Street Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLF) fell 2.52%, while the S&P 500 (SP500) gained 2.25%. Among the 11 S&P 500 sector ETFs, financials ranked sixth. Analyst Ian Bezek attributed the weakness to rising interest rates, which may stress consumers amid higher inflation and a weak housing market. He warned that sustained rate hikes could slow the economy, impacting the financial sector.
PayPal (PYPL) was the top performer, rising 16.85% due to merger and acquisition speculation. Other winners included Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) (+13.82%), Coinbase Global (COIN) (+13.11%), CME Group (CME) (+12.49%), and Cboe Global Markets (CBOE) (+12.29%). Bezek noted that Coinbase benefited from a cryptocurrency surge, while exchanges saw strong trading volumes and reduced AI-related concerns.
On the downside, Aon (AON) led declines with a 22.62% drop, followed by Cincinnati Financial (CINF) (-15.95%), Huntington Bancshares (HBAN) (-15.56%), American Express (AXP) (-14.60%), and Erie Indemnity (ERIE) (-14.07%). Bezek expressed concern about regional banks, citing risks similar to the 2023 failures of Silicon Valley Bank due to rapid rate increases.
Looking ahead, Bezek warned that further rate hikes could trigger a risk-off move in banking stocks, with investors scrutinizing deposit-flight risks. Conversely, a reversal in yields could improve the sector's outlook. He also highlighted the importance of the IPO market for investment banking profits and trading volumes in 2027.
