Firebase Fix Stabilizes Crash-Hit iOS Apps Overnight
Thousands of iPhone apps crashed overnight due to an issue with Google's Firebase service. The problem occurred when apps tried to launch and was caused by an 'incorrectly formatted payload' for the SDK. This affected thousands of apps, some of which saw tens of thousands of crashes.
The issue started on Monday at 17:41 US/PDT and was fixed by Monday at 19:52 US/PDT. No updates were required from developers to apply the fix.
Google confirmed that the patch was fully rolled out by midnight Pacific Time last night, and affected apps should be working again. However, some app instances may still experience crashes for up to four hours after the rollout completed due to caching behavior.
