Firefighter's Home Improvement Run Turns into Duckling Rescue Mission

A Pittsburgh firefighter's routine home improvement trip turned into an unexpected rescue mission when he spotted five ducklings trapped in a storm drain.

Matt Klein, a member of the North Fayette Township Volunteer Fire Department, was on his way to Home Depot for supplies when he noticed a frantic mother duck pacing near a grate. Upon investigation, he found the five ducklings at the bottom of the drain and quickly called for backup from his colleagues.

The department shared a post on Facebook detailing the rescue effort, stating that two of the ducklings were freed before the fire team arrived, while three others required assistance to escape. The last duckling was particularly challenging to reach, being 30 feet down in the drain pipe leading to another catch basin.

Thanks to some creative problem-solving and resourcefulness, the ducklings were safely flushed out of the pipe using water from an engine and reunited with their relieved mother.
