Fitbit Air's Premium Price Tag May Stymie Sales in India
Google's latest foray into wearable technology has hit Indian shores in the form of the Fitbit Air, but this screen-less fitness tracker may struggle to make a dent due to its high price point. Priced at ₹13,999 (roughly $146) in India, it's significantly more expensive than its US counterpart, which costs $99.
The Fitbit Air boasts an array of health and fitness tracking features, including 24/7 heart rate monitoring, heart rhythm monitoring with A-fib alerts, blood oxygen level monitoring, resting heart rate tracking, and sleep stage analysis. Its screen-less design is an attempt to tap into the growing demand for distraction-free health gadgets.
However, research firm IDC notes that despite a decline in wristband shipments, screen-less trackers are gaining traction globally. India currently accounts for only 5% of the screenless wearable market, and a premium device like the Fitbit Air may not be enough to make a significant impact. Counterpoint Research suggests that this could limit its overall sales numbers.
The Fitbit Air is set to go on sale in India from October 2, with availability through the Google Store and retail partners such as Flipkart, Croma, Reliance Digital, and Vijay Sales. Additionally, Google is offering a free three-month subscription to its Google Health premium membership with every purchase.
