Fitzpatrick's Return Could Spark New York Jets' Defense
The New York Jets are counting on Minkah Fitzpatrick to elevate their defense after signing him to a three-year, $40 million deal. The safety is a five-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro. He's the 13th-highest paid safety in the NFL, despite being 30 years old.
Fitzpatrick played only six snaps in the Jets' season opener before leaving with a groin injury, but he should be back on the field soon. In his absence, Dane Belton and Andre Cisco held down the fort admirably at safety, allowing zero touchdowns and three missed tackles through three games.
However, Fitzpatrick's presence is expected to bring star power to the Jets' defense, which has been lacking in splash plays. He has 21 career interceptions, tied for fourth among active safeties. His ability to make plays on the ball hasn't faltered, even if he hasn't had as many interceptions recently.
The Jets hope Fitzpatrick's return will help them take down quality offenses like Chicago's. With backup quarterback Tyson Bagent expected to start for the Bears, avoiding Fitzpatrick could be a part of their plan, but it might only put the ball in further danger if Bagent thinks too much about avoiding him.
