flydubai Defies EASA Warnings, Resumes Flights Over Iranian Airspace
flydubai has resumed flights over Iranian airspace despite warnings from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to avoid the region due to safety risks. The carrier's decision was influenced by potential time and fuel savings, with the first flight shaving off around 40 minutes of travel time compared to detours through Iraq. flydubai's Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft flew from Dubai International Airport to Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport on August 17, marking a shift back to using Iranian airspace for flights in Central Asia and Eastern Europe.
The airline has signalled that the move will bring benefits such as shorter flight routes, less fuel consumption, and reduced airway congestion. According to AirLive analysis, flydubai's first flight over Iran saved around 40 minutes off the total flight time to Baku, taking three hours and ten minutes compared to three hours and 50 minutes when circumventing Iranian airspace.
EASA has issued several Conflict Zone Information Bulletins (CZIB) advising operators to avoid flying over Iran due to ongoing security and military risks. However, flydubai has conducted its own safety checks and risk assessments to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.
