Freestanding Pergola Builders Warned: Don't Skimp on Footings

John and Dave debated whether homeowners should anchor pergola posts to an existing four-inch concrete slab or install dedicated concrete footings for added stability. They concluded that the latter option is safer due to its ability to withstand the weight and strain of a freestanding structure.
Dave shared his experience building a freestanding outdoor shelter, where he poured concrete footings, anchored it with Tapcon screws, and accounted for drainage. He recommended using Simpson post anchors instead of burying wooden posts directly in the ground, noting their preference for properly secured brackets.
