From Corporate Career to Rs 250-Crore Snacking Empire Ahana Gautam's Open Secret Story
Ahana Gautam, an IIT Bombay graduate and Harvard MBA, could have easily pursued a traditional corporate career with her background at General Mills and Procter & Gamble. However, a visit to a Whole Foods store in the US sparked a different vision for her. She noticed a gap in India's packaged food market, where health-conscious snacking options were scarce despite the cultural emphasis on nutrition. This observation led her to co-found Open Secret, a healthy snacking company, in 2019.
Gautam's entrepreneurial journey was deeply influenced by her upbringing in Rajasthan with a single mother who faced numerous social and financial challenges. Her mother's resilience inspired Gautam to pursue the best education and eventually build her own business. Open Secret started as an internet-first brand targeting children's snacking needs, with products like nutty cookies, nuts, chips, and protein-focused snacks. The company quickly gained traction, raising $1.25 million in seed funding shortly after its launch.
Open Secret's growth was marked by significant funding rounds and revenue increases. In July 2021, it raised $2.36 million in Series A funding, followed by nearly $10 million in Series B funding a year later. Despite rapid revenue growth, from Rs 30 lakh in FY20 to Rs 38.3 crore in FY23, net losses also increased due to heavy spending on brand building and expansion. However, losses narrowed considerably to around Rs 7.2 crore by FY25, with revenue reaching Rs 87.5 crore.
The company's latest valuation stands at approximately Rs 250 crore, with Gautam's entrepreneurial journey coinciding with personal challenges, including the loss of her mother in March 2021. For Gautam, Open Secret represents more than a business opportunity; it addresses a problem she experienced growing up and saw in other families.
