Frontierland Transformed: Disney's Magic Kingdom Overhauls Classic Land

Disney's Magic Kingdom is undergoing a major redevelopment project in Frontierland, which has resulted in the permanent removal of over 30% of the area's classic experiences. The changes are part of the construction of Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed expansion that will bring new attractions and scenery to the land.

The five removed attractions include the Frontierland Shootin' Arcade, which operated for over 50 years before closing in June 2024; Rivers of America, a waterway that wrapped around Tom Sawyer Island and provided scenic views of the area; Tom Sawyer Island itself; Splash Mountain, which was transformed into Tiana's Bayou Adventure in 2024; and Westward Ho Refreshments, a dining location that closed in June 2026.

While some attractions have been removed or replaced, others have undergone significant changes. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, for example, reopened in May 2026 with refreshed storytelling, visual effects, and details. The Country Bear Jamboree was also revamped into the Country Bear Musical Jamboree in 2024.

The redevelopment project is expected to continue, with new attractions and scenery planned for the area. While some long-time visitors may be disappointed by the changes, Disney aims to create a unique and exciting experience for future guests.
