FTC Warns Travelers About Common Google Search Habit Leading to Scams
Travelers are being warned by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) about a common Google search habit that can lead to costly scams. Many trips start with a simple Google search, but before clicking on the first link, it's essential to check if it's not a potential scam. According to the FTC report on 2026 summer travel scams, scammers often use sponsored ads and convincing fake websites to impersonate trusted airlines and hotels.
Scammers may put their number alongside a well-known company's name or link to a website that looks similar to a legitimate hotel or airline's brand website. To avoid these scammers, the FTC recommends scrolling to the unpaid search results and checking if you have the right website or contact info for the business you're looking for.
Alternatively, type the company's website directly into the browser if you know it. The FTC spokesperson also suggests doing some research prior to entering any payment information by looking up the name of the travel company with the words 'scam,' 'review,' or 'complaint.'
