Gates Warns AI Development Must Be Slowed to Prevent Global Chaos

Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has sounded the alarm on the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that humanity can no longer afford to wait for a global plan to navigate its implications.

Gates wrote in an essay published this week that the AI boom is a technological revolution unlike any other, with huge implications for every sector of human life. Without a carefully crafted plan for navigating the next several years, he warned that long-term benefits will be overshadowed by social, political, and economic chaos.

Gates acknowledged that tech companies are pushing to develop AI at full speed, driven by geopolitical and economic incentives. He rejected calls from some industry leaders to make AI widely available as a way to mitigate risks, saying this approach would only exacerbate the problem.

Instead, Gates advocated for a public democratic process involving elected officials, policymakers, educators, health workers, local officials, and community leaders to develop a transition plan into the AI era. He also emphasized the need for cooperation between the US and China, as well as input from religious leaders like Pope Leo XIV.
