Gates Warns AI Has Crossed 'Dangerous Thresholds'
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) could be 'the most dangerous thing humans have ever gone near,' citing its rapid evolution and intensifying debate over safety and oversight. In an interview with New York Times columnist Ezra Klein, Gates emphasized that AI's ability to empower malicious actors is already a reality.
Gates pointed out that AI has crossed thresholds in cyberattacks and biological threats, stating 'A.I. has crossed the threshold that its ability to empower a bioterrorist to kill hundreds of millions, that exists today.' He also rejected the idea that technology companies can self-regulate, arguing that government-enforced supervisory layers are necessary.
This warning comes as AI leaders remain divided over how to balance its potential with risks. Some, like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, have expressed concerns about AI's potential for harm, while others, such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and President Donald Trump's administration, prioritize accelerating U.S. AI development.
