Gaza's Ruins Visible on Google Maps: Devastating Scale of Destruction Revealed

The devastating effects of the war in Gaza are now visible on Google Maps, giving users a glimpse into the scale of destruction. A search for familiar locations such as schools, shops, and mosques still brings up map markers, but zooming in reveals the blocks around them reduced to rubble.

Images circulating online show damaged neighborhoods near Al-Shifa Hospital and makeshift shelters along the coast, highlighting the extent of the damage. However, it's essential to note that the map markers only indicate places that were mapped, without confirming which buildings remain standing or usable.

The United Nations Satellite Centre has assessed imagery from June 16, finding that 201,290 structures, approximately 82% of all structures in Gaza, had sustained damage. Of these, over 134,000 were completely destroyed.

The Al-Shifa Hospital area is a prime example of the destruction, with extensive damage to emergency, surgical, and maternity buildings reported after Israeli forces withdrew from the medical complex in April 2024.
