GE Aerospace Confident Redesigned Mid-Seal Won't Delay Boeing 777X Entry
GE Aerospace has confirmed that its redesigned mid-seal for the GE9X engine will not delay the entry into service of the Boeing 777X beyond 2027. According to Chief Financial Officer Rahul Ghai, GE has a 'huge degree of confidence' in the new component after internal testing.
The issue with the original mid-seal was discovered during a shop visit involving a flight-test engine in January 2026, and it was subsequently redesigned by GE. The company began shipping engines incorporating the new seal to Boeing in the third quarter of 2026, and FAA approval is expected within the next few months.
Boeing has been working on the 777X program for several years, with repeated schedule changes and engine-related problems causing delays. The first delivery of the 777-9 aircraft to Lufthansa is still targeted for 2027, despite the program being around six years behind schedule and having accumulated $15 billion in charges.
