GE Fixes Critical Engine Component Ahead of Boeing 777X Delivery Timeline
The GE9X engine's certification timeline has been affected by a redesigned turbine seal that balances temperature and pressure between stages. The redesign is part of an ongoing effort to address a crack in the mid-seal, which was discovered during a shop visit for a flight-test engine.
According to ePlane, General Electric (GE) has reportedly addressed the issue with the GE9X engine by updating its tooling and increasing supplier readiness. The redesigned component is expected to flow into production engines and future overhauls without delay.
The redesign was made necessary due to a crack that presented itself on a flight-test engine. However, GE's compliance with corrective actions overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has given Boeing the liberty to continue flight tests as planned.
