Gemini 4 AI Model Nears Completion as Google Seeks to Regain Lead
Koray Kavukcuoglu, the new head of Google's DeepMind division, has signaled that the Gemini 4 AI model is nearing completion. In his first media appearance since taking on the role, Kavukcuoglu mentioned that the company wants to release an early post-training version of Gemini 4 as soon as possible due to strong internal results.
The Gemini 4 model has been in development for some time now, and its delayed launch has given rivals OpenAI and Anthropic a lead in AI research. Sundar Pichai, Google's chief executive, previously promised a major update to the Gemini 3 series by June, but it never materialized.
Kavukcuoglu attributed the delay to Google taking a step back from the Gemini 3.5 Pro update to focus on faster, less powerful Flash models instead. He emphasized that he is confident Google will remain at the forefront of AI development.
