Gemini Ditches Daily Prompt Count for Allowance-Based System
Google's Gemini has undergone significant changes in how it measures and limits user access. Until May 2026, users were subject to a daily prompt count, but this system is now obsolete. Instead, Google uses an allowance-based system that refreshes every five hours within a weekly ceiling.
The new system takes into account four factors: prompt complexity, model usage, features invoked, and conversation length. This means that tasks such as code execution or file analysis cost more than simple chat requests. Long-running conversations can also quickly deplete the allowance.
Google introduced this change to make the system more honest per request, eliminating the issue of wasting allowance on trivial requests while undercharging expensive ones. However, predictability has been lost, and users now need to find their edge by hitting the allowance limit.
