Gemini Falls Short of Native Windows Integration

Google has released a native Gemini app for Windows, ending two and a half years of users being redirected to a browser tab when interacting with Google's AI assistant.

The app is available as a free download from gemini.google/desktop and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11, but its integration into the operating system lags behind Microsoft Copilot, which has deeper hooks into the desktop. The Gemini app can be summoned using the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut, but lacks a taskbar icon or binding to the Windows key.

The gap in integration is significant, as Copilot ships pre-installed on new PCs and arrives with a fixed taskbar position, whereas Gemini requires manual download and sign-in. This difference in placement gives Microsoft an advantage in the battle for desktop AI dominance.

While the Gemini app itself is free, users will need to subscribe to Google AI Plus or higher tiers to access more capable models, including Gemini 3.1 Pro and Gemini 3.8 Flash. The pricing structure is as follows: Base model with daily usage limits (free), expanded usage limits (Google AI Plus), Gemini 3.1 Pro ($19.99/month), and Gemini 3.8 Flash (restricted to Google AI Ultra subscribers).
