Gemini Reaches One Billion Monthly Active Users, Challenges OpenAI's ChatGPT

Google's Gemini app has surpassed one billion monthly active users, according to its CEO Sundar Pichai. This milestone makes it the fastest-growing product in Google's history and the 14th to reach this milestone. The Gemini app allows users to interact with AI through various methods, including voice commands and camera or screen sharing.

According to official figures released by Google, 63% of Gemini users interact with the assistant using voice. Additionally, one in five Gemini Live sessions now involve camera or screen sharing rather than just voice alone. Students are heavy users of file uploads, with 38% of their school-related requests including an attachment.

The app generates more than 150 million images per day and can carry out automated tasks across over 40 apps, such as booking a ride or making a dinner reservation. On Apple devices, the app has more than 100 million monthly active users on iOS, while Mac users prompt Gemini roughly twice as much as users on other platforms.

The milestone puts Gemini in close competition with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which also reached one billion monthly active users in June. The announcement comes shortly after Google's second-quarter earnings call, where the company said Gemini had more than 950 million monthly users and that daily active users had tripled over the past year.
