Gemini Takes Center Stage as Google Phases Out Customized Chatbots
Google has announced that its Gemini skills will replace Gems, allowing users to create customized chatbots without any paywall restrictions. The company confirmed that existing Gems will be converted to skills automatically or can be done manually by users.
The new skill feature is set to launch soon, with some features missing in Gems already added, such as the ability to share skills and add files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook.
Gemini skills will be available for any user over 18 with a personal Google account, unlike previous restrictions where only paid users could use them. This change comes after Google announced that it would phase out Gems starting in November, while Gems created by Google Workspace business, enterprise, and non-profit accounts will stick around until March 2027.
The shift towards Gemini skills also aligns with other AI platforms like OpenAI's decision to replace custom GPTs with ChatGPT plugins. Unlike Gems, which are self-contained chatbots, skills can be invoked within any Gemini chat session by typing '/'. This allows for powerful AI workflows and more flexibility in creating customized interactions.
