Gemini Takes Over as Google Assistant Gets the Boot from Android
Google has begun replacing Google Assistant on Android devices with Gemini, a change that is rolling out widely. The removal of the option to switch back to Google Assistant was part of a long-planned transition that started last year.
In August, Google emailed users saying it would discontinue Google Assistant on mobile devices. The company noted that once the change reached users' devices, they would no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant.
The change affects Android phones and tablets, as well as Wear OS watches, headphones, and Android Auto projected from a phone. However, Nest and Google Home speakers are unaffected for now, and cars with Google built-in will keep Google Assistant until September 4.
Some users have expressed dissatisfaction with the change, citing issues with Gemini's reliability and accuracy. They point out that Gemini lacks features available in Google Assistant, such as offline commands.
