Gemini Tops 1 Billion Monthly Users, Cementing AI Assistant's Dominance
Google's Gemini AI assistant has reached 1 billion monthly active users, becoming the 14th Google product to cross this threshold. This milestone was announced by CEO Sundar Pichai, who described Gemini as Google's fastest-growing product ever.
Gemini's user base grew rapidly over the past few months, rising from 750 million in early 2026 to 950 million in July and finally reaching 1 billion in August. Of these users, more than 100 million are on Apple devices.
For comparison, ChatGPT reached 1 billion monthly active app users in May 2026, according to data from Sensor Tower reported by Reuters. OpenAI later announced that ChatGPT had surpassed 1 billion weekly active users in July, with 900 million weekly active users in February.
The figures are not identical measures, as Google reports monthly active users for Gemini while OpenAI emphasizes weekly active users for ChatGPT. The rapid growth of these AI assistants has significant implications for the industry, with companies competing over user engagement, functionality, and revenue generation.
