Geopolitical Tensions Weigh on US Stock Index Futures
US stock index futures began trading weakly on August 31, as geopolitical tensions weighed on equity markets. The Nasdaq index futures dropped by 0.21%, while S&P 500 and Dow futures fell by approximately 0.26% and 0.23%, respectively.
The current situation is attributed to escalating conflicts between the US and Iran, which have driven up oil prices. Additionally, market expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes are pushing U.S. Treasury yields higher, further pressuring equity index futures.
Despite these challenges, US stocks remain on track to finish August with gains. The Dow is up about 2.1% for the month, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq have risen by around 3% and 4%, respectively.
Nvidia's stellar earnings report has been a significant contributor to tech sector growth, with its stock surging 8.7% after release. The company's CEO, Jensen Huang, emphasized AI's impact on global manufacturing, driving capacity back to the US.
Meanwhile, Apple will undergo its first CEO transition in nearly 15 years tomorrow, as Tim Cook steps down and John Ternus takes over as CEO. This shift may impact Apple's push into AI applications, currently lagging behind Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI.
