Giant Caterpillars Invade Homes in Liberia's Gbarnga

Residents of Far East Community in Gbarnga, Bong County, Liberia are struggling to cope with an infestation of giant brown caterpillars that have invaded homes and public spaces. The caterpillars, which appear to be coming from golden plum trees, have left families alarmed and concerned about public health and sanitation.

Community members described the situation as a 'shocking invasion' and appealed for urgent intervention from authorities, including the Ministry of Health and the National Disaster Management Agency. While no cases of illness associated with the caterpillars have been reported, residents are worried about possible contamination of household water sources.

Mother Linda N. Kollie, a resident of the community, explained that this is not an unusual occurrence, as the caterpillars appear every year around August and September when the golden plum trees produce fruit. However, she noted that traditional methods for controlling the insects have proven ineffective, and residents are seeking professional assistance.

The District Health Officer, Ellen Menepele Gofarson, confirmed that health authorities had received reports about the infestation and were preparing to assess the situation. Environmental experts caution that some caterpillar species can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, but the specific species affecting Far East Community has not yet been identified.
