Global Data Breach Costs Hit Record High as AI-Driven Attacks Rise

The global average cost of a data breach has reached a record high of USD 4.99 million, according to IBM's 2026 report.

This increase is attributed in part to the growing use of AI by attackers, with one in four malicious breaches involving AI, a 56% rise from the previous year.

AI threat detection works by learning normal behavior and identifying unusual patterns, which can help security teams detect potential threats before they become major incidents.

However, AI systems themselves are also becoming targets for attackers, with 21% of breached organizations reporting an incident involving an AI model or application.

IBM's research found that the cost of a data breach was significantly lower at organizations that used AI and automation extensively in security, averaging USD 1.93 million less than those that did not use them.
