Global Oil Majors Flock to Africa and the Americas
Equinor has acquired a 17.4% participating interest in Petroleum Exploration License 90 (PEL 90) in Namibia, joining Chevron subsidiary Harmattan Energy and other partners.
The acquisition is Equinor's first venture in the country and adds to its broader Atlantic Margin position, according to Philippe Mathieu, executive vice president for international exploration and production.
In another development, TotalEnergies has signed an agreement with Galp Energia to acquire a 40% operated interest in PEL83 offshore Namibia, becoming the license's operator. The license includes giant light oil and gas condensate discoveries.
Eni has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Senegal to evaluate the potential of five offshore blocks, while Woodside Energy has agreed to analyze hydrocarbon exploration opportunities in Mexico's Gulf of Mexico with Pemex. Meanwhile, UK-based BritENERGY Group has acquired controlling interest in 13 wells on 3,000 acres in New Mexico.
