Goldman Sachs appoints former Japanese finance official as advisor
Goldman Sachs Japan has appointed Shigeru Ariizumi as its first International Advisor in Japan, effective October 1, 2026. Ariizumi brings a wealth of experience from his career in Japan's Ministry of Finance, where he held senior roles from 1988 until his retirement in July 2025 as Vice Minister for International Affairs at the Financial Services Agency (FSA). His career also includes leadership positions at the OECD, IAIS, and IOSCO, where he represented Japan in global financial and regulatory discussions.
International Advisors at Goldman Sachs provide strategic insights on political, economic, regulatory, and industry developments. Ariizumi's expertise in global macroeconomics, financial regulation, and international affairs will support the firm's leadership and clients in navigating evolving market conditions. His appointment is particularly significant given the current geopolitical uncertainty and regulatory challenges facing Japan's financial sector.
Hidehiro Imatsu, President of Goldman Sachs Japan, highlighted Ariizumi's contributions to financial and capital market frameworks, stating that his expertise will be invaluable in delivering high-level service to clients. Ariizumi expressed enthusiasm for the role, aiming to leverage his experience to strengthen Japan's financial sector and its global ties.
Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Ariizumi served as Special Counsel at Mori Hamada since February 2026 and is licensed to practice law in Japan and New York.
