Goldman Sachs Forecasts $700 Billion AI-Driven Investment Cycle
Goldman Sachs has identified what it calls an AI-driven 'capex super cycle,' which is expected to have far-reaching impacts on the global economy until at least 2026, and possibly even into 2028. This investment cycle is characterized by synchronized spending across both public and private sectors, with major players like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta allocating significant amounts from their balance sheets.
The bank estimates that hyperscaler capital expenditure could reach around $527 billion by 2026, serving as a conservative baseline. However, Goldman Sachs forecasts a potential upside, envisioning this figure to surge to $700 billion or more.
CeO David Solomon emphasizes the extensive nature of this investment cycle, noting that it transcends AI technologies alone and affects multiple industries, including energy, infrastructure, and data centers. He explains that each data center requires power, every power source needs infrastructure, and securing financing for this infrastructure is essential, creating a cascading demand.
Goldman Sachs predicts a robust increase in investment banking and capital market activities as businesses from various sectors compete to obtain financing for their expansion efforts. This dynamic will likely lead to an uptick in mergers and acquisitions, increased corporate credit, and heightened private equity activities.
