Goldman Sachs Warns of Impending AI Debt Storm
Goldman Sachs has warned that the AI debt market is entering the 'eye of the storm,' with greater shocks to follow after a brief respite. According to Jeffrey Papai, a fixed-income credit trader and investment-grade credit specialist at Goldman Sachs, the temporary slowdown in AI bond supply during the fourth quarter will provide short-term opportunities for spread tightening.
Papai notes that the $300 billion in AI-related bond issuance year-to-date has made it the most significant theme in the investment-grade credit market. However, he emphasizes that this view is limited to a tactical perspective and advises investors to reduce positions on strength during this rebound rather than chasing gains.
The AI debt expansion is beginning to exert competitive pressure on the U.S. Treasury market, with debt issuance by hyperscale cloud computing companies and chip manufacturers projected to increase by 40% year-over-year to $340 billion in 2027. This surge in AI infrastructure construction is triggering an unprecedented supply storm in the credit market.
The Goldman Sachs AI Credit Basket (GSUCIABK) is currently less than 10 basis points away from its widest historical level, and Papai sees an opportunity for spread tightening over the next one to two months. However, he warns that renewed pressure is highly probable as a new wave of supply approaches in 2027.
