Gold's Rally May Slow, But 'Debasement Trade' Narrative Remains Strong

Gold's recent rally may slow down, but its 'debasement trade' narrative remains intact. According to Goldman Sachs derivatives strategist Brian Garrett, while gold has surged roughly 10% this month, marking one of its strongest monthly performances in decades, the pace of gains may moderate.

Garrett notes that market attention on the 'currency debasement' narrative has climbed to its highest level since January 2026. This narrative framework will not dissipate, and investors can capture upside at lower cost through options structures like call spreads or barrier options.

In equities, the S&P 500's repeated record highs alongside extreme retail bearishness represent a rare divergence signal. Historically, this combination has corresponded to a 75% win rate for gains, with the index averaging a 1.1% return over the following month and 2.9% over three months.

Goldman Sachs' trading desk has observed a sharp decline in single-stock implied volatility over the past month, creating a window to buy volatility. The market has rarely priced three-month forward implied volatility below realized volatility, a negative volatility risk premium, a phenomenon that has been uncommon over the past four years.
