Google Ad Tech Monopoly: Judge Imposes Behavioral Remedies
A US judge has rejected a request to break up Google's ad tech division, instead imposing behavioral remedies to address anti-competitive practices. The ruling, issued by Judge Brinkema, states that Google must make significant changes to its business practices, including data-sharing provisions and a ban on discriminatory bidding.
The court also established a third-party monitor and technical committee to oversee Google's compliance with the judgment. This group will ensure that Google sticks to the rules and does not revert to monopolistic tactics. The oversight period is set at six years, although the judge retains the authority to extend it if necessary.
Google had argued against a breakup, while the DOJ pushed for a 12-year oversight period. The judge sided with Google on the timeline but agreed with the DOJ's concerns about the company's market dominance.
