Google Adds Native Markdown Support to Docs and Drive
Google is introducing native support for Markdown files in Google Docs and Google Drive, allowing users to edit and collaborate on .md and .markdown files without converting them to the Docs format. This feature, announced on October 5, 2026, in the Google Workspace Updates blog, enables users to maintain the original file structure while working in Google Docs.
The update also brings rendered previews for Markdown files in Google Drive, displaying formatted documents with clickable links and structured tables. This change eliminates the need for manual conversions, which often altered formatting, stripped comments, and fragmented files. The feature is available to all Google Workspace customers and personal Google account users.
Google describes Markdown as a standard text format widely used by large language models to preserve structured content. The company highlights that the change allows both people and AI agents to work on the same files seamlessly. The rollout began on October 5 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains and is expected to complete within 15 days.
Users can check if the feature is active by uploading a .md or .markdown file to Google Drive and verifying that a formatted preview appears. Once the feature is active, users can edit and comment on Markdown files directly in Google Docs while keeping the original file type. This update has been a frequent request in Google's support forums and on Reddit, with Proton Docs already offering similar functionality for over two years.
