Google adds native markdown support to Drive and Docs
Google Drive and Google Docs are expanding their support for markdown files, now offering full, native integration. This update allows users to open, edit, and collaborate on markdown (.md) files directly within Google Docs and other apps in the suite. The new feature includes real-time editing and comments, with full rendering of markdown formatting, making it easier to work with these files without converting them to another format.
Google highlights that this enhancement benefits AI use cases, such as enabling AI agents to collaborate on documents and sync with Gemini Notebook. The company notes that markdown has become a common language between humans and AI agents, facilitating smoother interactions.
The update also brings rendered markdown support to Google Drive, allowing users to view fully formatted documents with clickable links and structured tables directly in the platform. This feature is rolling out starting today but may take up to 15 days to become available for all users. It is enabled by default, even on admin-controlled accounts.
