Google Ads Filters Fall Short in Preventing Fake Leads
Google Ads' filters for invalid traffic do not prevent fake leads from reaching advertisers' lead forms, according to the company's own documentation. In a recent update, Google revealed that its anti-bot systems mostly judge ad clicks after the ad has already shown, leaving room for bots and careless people to fill in companies' contact forms.
This can be particularly problematic for businesses paying Google to find customers, as junk form entries can land in sales lists and teach Google's automated bidding the wrong lessons. To mitigate this issue, Google recommends that advertisers implement three technical safeguards on their lead forms: reCAPTCHA, double opt-in email confirmation, and server-side validation.
The company emphasizes that maintaining high lead quality is a shared responsibility between Google Ads and the advertiser. This means that advertisers need to take additional steps beyond relying solely on Google's filters to prevent invalid leads.
