Google Ads Used to Steal Bank Logins and Drain Accounts
Cybercrime losses have reached nearly $21 billion annually, prompting experts to warn of increasingly sophisticated AI scams. Kurt Knutsson, an expert in cybersecurity, has highlighted that investment fraud alone cost victims over $8.65 billion last year.
One particular scam has been making headlines: scammers are using Google ads to steal bank logins and drain accounts. The Justice Department announced the extradition of a Russian web developer accused of helping run a large bank account takeover operation.
The group bought sponsored search engine links that sent banking customers to fake login pages, where victims entered their credentials thinking they had reached their bank. This scam has captured over 5,000 stolen login credentials and caused millions in losses.
Federal investigators have identified at least 19 victims across the United States, with approximately $28 million in attempted losses and about $14.6 million in actual losses tied to those victims.
