Google AdX Breakup Ruling Sparks Relief Among Publishers
The court's refusal to force Google AdX to break up has left many large publishers feeling relieved and pragmatic about the outcome. Some had been hoping for a breakup, while others never thought it was realistic. Now, they're focusing on the potential benefits of behavioral remedies that could change how Google operates.
Scott Messer, an independent ad-tech consultant and former publisher revenue executive, notes that people are disappointed by the decision. 'There's the chaos agents who want to see it burn to the ground, and then there's the 'well, I guess it pays to be a monopolist' camp.'
Senior commercial executives at global publishers agree that divestiture would have simply shifted the power to another owner, without changing market dynamics. 'You'd create another monster,' one executive said.
However, they see some silver linings in the ruling, including stability and clearer, better-enforced rules. This is especially important given the rapid shifts in AI and emerging agentic buying models.
