Google Agrees to £260 Million Settlement Over Play Store Commission Rates
A £260 million settlement between Google and a group of UK app developers has been approved by the Competition Appeal Tribunal, bringing an end to a long-running dispute over allegedly excessive commissions. The agreement was reached just 12 days before a trial was set to begin in London.
The deal will see Google pay out £160 million to eligible developers, while £100 million will be set aside for the funder, after-the-event insurers, and legal team. However, it's worth noting that Google admits no liability and the tribunal will make no finding on whether the commission at the centre of the case was excessive or unfair.
Professor Barry Rodger, who represented the group of developers, has been praised for his role in securing the settlement. The agreement is seen as a significant victory for app developers who were affected by Google's commission rates.
