Google Agrees to £260M Settlement with UK App Developers
Google has agreed to pay £260 million to settle a mass lawsuit in London brought on behalf of UK app developers. The claim, valued at over £1 billion, sought compensation for developers who sold apps on Google's Play Store in the UK.
The lawsuit alleged that Google abused its dominant position by preventing developers from distributing apps through alternative means and charging an unfair commission, typically 30%. Lawyers for academic Barry Rodger claimed that Google's actions stifled competition and innovation among app developers.
The case was set to go to trial next month at London's Competition Appeal Tribunal. However, a proposed settlement between Rodger's lawyers and Google has been reached, subject to the tribunal's approval.
